University of Traditional Medicine – Armenia

The department of General Medicine was founded in 1991. The head of the department (Dean) is Mr. A. Karapetyan. The University prepares high – level medical scientists in this field who are experienced in using scientific empirical methods of diagnosis and treatment of traditional and modern medicine. Those displaying clinical flexible thinking apply their theoretical and practical knowledge gained during their studies in practice, combining traditional medicine and modern methods of diagnosis and treatment.

In 2001 the specialty was accredited by the Ministry of Education and Science, Armenia. The graduates receive a state diploma here. The tenure of education in the department is for 6 years and the total credit of the subjects given is 360. For nearly 26 years the University of Traditional Medicine has been preparing medical personnel who possess modern and traditional medicine methods of diagnosis and treatment.

University graduates from here work in theoretical and practical medicine fields in Armenia and abroad. Many of the university graduates are now practicing Doctors of Medical Sciences. The vast majority of the graduates work successfully as practical physicians, researchers, lecturers, health organizers in leading clinics and medical institutions of not only Armenia but also abroad.

University of Traditional Medicine of Armenia

The University of Traditional Medicine of Armenia was founded in the year 1991. The University is one of the most revered universities in all of Armenia. Even with its recent past, the University and its faculty members and students have been able to make a mark on the world of medical research and education. Every year hundreds of foreign students from different countries all over the world enroll to study in this university. Students from countries like Pakistan, India, African countries, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, etc. look forward to be a part of this university and learn in detail the science of medicine, and eventually are of service to the society.

Academic Activities

From its first day the University adopted a clear policy of implementation of theoretical and practical research in accordance with a strategic plan, which is based on the following idea: to restore and to put on scientific basis, the diagnosis and treatment methods of traditional medicine.

  • Research projects include scientific articles, monographs, textbooks, manuals and methodological guidelines.
  • Besides professional staff, the students and alumni also participate regularly in researches.
  • The initiative to invest centuries-old traditional medicine research in the learning process as well as the best service in the field of integrative medicine were highly appreciated during the international conference held in Cyprus in 1998.
  • University organizes national and international conferences and seminars.
  • Most of the 200 published theoretical and practical scientific works have been invested into practice.

Head of the Chair of Traditional Medicine A. Minasyan developed method of individual choice of disease diagnosis, complex treatment, herbal medicines and chemicals according to modern and traditional medicine; the Government Patent Office recognized invention and defined copyright. Taking into account the peculiarities of traditional and modern medicine, methodology of traditional medical research was developed in compliance with the requirements of the World Health Organization (2002), international scientific achievements and development trends. The main priority of the University is the implementation of scientific directions.

The research is the main direction of professors’ and students’ activity. This strategy of scientific research suggests another solution for interrelated problems:

Expansion of scientific research, renovation and scientific proposition of traditional medicine’s diagnosis and treatment methods, publication of scientific articles, monographs, manuals, guides and textbooks;

Development of the scientific potential of the UTM, promotion of professors’ and students’ scientific research on the basis of the results of the studies;

Development of educational program of “Traditional medicine”, making bases for the development of the program of “Integrative medicine”, creating a solid educational base.

As a result of studies of the Chair of “Traditional medicine” developed the programs of “Acupuncture”, “Apitherapy”, “Homeopathy”, “Iridology”, “Leech Therapy”, “Manual therapy”, “Phytotherapy” and other educational programs.

University of Traditional Medicine, Student Life

Student Council

UTM Student Council is a representative, self-governed and the highest elected body representing social interests of students. It is non-political and non-partisan organization. UTM Student Council expresses and defends the interests of students, promotes their educational, scientific, artistic, physical, moral and spiritual development.

SC has established committees whose task is to work in the following areas: Students’ moral development is the goal of the cultural sector, and the SC organizes more events to reach it. The sport sector’s responsibility is to organize sports competitions and events periodically. The main goal of the entertainment and recreation sector is to provide the students with entertaining programs. The progress’ sector members should try to generate competition in the performance of students and organize “Best Student” awards each semester. The members of external relations’ sector should liaise with other universities and organize meetings. SC committees involve both Armenian and foreign students.

Student Scientific Activity

The involvement of UTM students in scientific and methodological work is done through Participation in conferences, presentation of reports, Scientific publications (co-authored), Participation in open discussions, scientific events, seminars, Participation in professors’ researches, Participation in conferences organized by various medical institutions, organizing “First Steps” workshop for new students.

Conferences, presentations, open discussions along with popular scientific events organized by the SSA help the students to conduct scientific studies in the field of “Contemporary issues of traditional medicine” and in other areas. The students, studying in different courses, and also the university graduates take part in researches. Students have an opportunity to choose the preferred field of research. Students also have the opportunity to choose their preferred topic and scientific supervisor.

It has become a tradition for the Chair of “Traditional medicine” to organize inter-chair seminars with students and graduates.
